Anita "Annie" Awasthi is a girl from a middle class family in Bhopal who rejects several marriage proposals as she is desperate to leave India and settle abroad. Her constant rejections cause stress for her parents. One day, she finds out that her next-door neighbor's son Pushpeender Tyagi has taken a break from his job in Dubai to find himself a suitable woman to marry. Pushpinder is 36 and is desperate to marry a girl, regardless of her appearance or personality, but his mother Indu is more concerned about what kind of dowry her son can fetch. Ani's unmarried aunt Prabha Mausi encourages Ani to convince Pushpinder to marry her, as he can be her ticket out of India.
Pushpinder and family visit an apparently rich family for a marriage proposal, and Pushpinder agrees to the marriage despite the girl showing no real interest in him. While planning Pushpinder's wedding, his mother Indu contacts the girl's family with her dowry demands, but the girl's family rejects them. In a fit of rage, Indu calls off the wedding. Realizing that Pushpinder is a total mama's boy who could never cross his mother's wishes, Ani talks him into eloping with her. When they show up back at the family's doorstep already married, the two families are forced to accept their marriage and start preparing for a wedding ceremony a few days later.
Despite Indu's anger that Ani's family cannot afford her dowry demands, the wedding goes ahead as planned. When Ani's father separately offers Pushpinder a portion of the dowry amount, he refuses to take it as he does not believe in the concept of dowry. Ani overhears this and gains respect for Pushpinder. However, she feels no attraction toward Pushpinder and cannot consummate the marriage. News arrives from Dubai that Pushpinder has actually been fired from his job, but Pushpinder reveals he has secured a job in Bhopal and plans to settle there. This enrages both Ani and Indu, as they both desperately want Pushpinder to move back to Dubai. Soon, Pushpinder is offered his Dubai job back, but he plans to reject the offer and stay close to his family. Ani and Indu plot to force Pushpinder into moving back to Dubai by having Ani withhold sex, but Pushpinder overhears this, and in the resulting argument slaps Ani, creating a rift between them. He apologizes to Ani and tries to make it up to her, but he has crossed a line and she does not wish to reconcile.
One night, Pushpinder abruptly leaves for Dubai, leaving a note for Ani in which he apologizes again for slapping her and leaving her a one-way ticket to Singapore from his savings, so that her dream of settling outside of India may yet come true. Pushpinder's absence causes both Indu and Ani to see the error of their ways - Indu for forcing Pushpinder into life decisions based on her financial needs, and Ani for marrying Pushpinder out of a desire to leave India but no personal attachment. However, Pushpinder returns after 24 hours, unable to leave Indu or Ani behind. His return causes both Indu and Ani to reconcile with him, and he and Ani dash off to consummate the marriage.
